Carroll Hi Q team sets record for points scored in a season
February 22, 2021
The Archbishop Carroll Hi-Q team finished its 2020-2021 annual competition with a new record of total points scored during a season.
The team finished just short of the play-offs. They placed eighth out of 21 schools in the Delaware County competition.
¨We were really excited to even have a season this year and it was great to participate in the competition,” said Cecelia Cherico, a senior on the Hi-Q team. “We really worked together despite the technical difficulties and ended up scoring the most amount of points that Carroll has ever received.¨
The Carroll Hi-Q team spent much of their free time studying in preparation for the competition. The team had a wide variety of subjects to study on top of whatever they were learning in school.
¨Ëverybody on the team played their part and worked together to make sure that we were preparing for our matches,” senior Jacky Chen said. “That means sacrificing free time to study material outside what we learn in class, reading short stories or Shakespeare, or brushing up on current events by following the news.Their dedication and hard work earned us points come match time.¨
Because of the COVID-19 restrictions this year, the competition was forced to change how it was held. Instead of having the competition take place in one building as usual, Delco Hi-Q opted to have it online. The competition was held online through a Zoom call. With online calls tending to have audio delays, some of the rules had to be changed in order to keep it fair. Rather than having it be a competition of who can answer first, each question went one team at a time.
¨It was definitely different since it was completely online this year, but we still made it work!” said senior Theresa Pham. “All of the new team members were able to catch up very quickly and we all worked together super well.”
