Lady Patriots suffer second season defeat to defending PCL champion

On March 7, West Catholic scored its second win in 2021 against the Lady Patriots, tallying up 46 points to Carroll’s 39 on West Catholic’s court.

When the Patriots faced West Catholic, the girls had more than enough adrenaline rushing through their systems after their big win against Prendie a few days before. Carroll held the extremely talented and aggressive West Catholic team — the defending Philadelphia Catholic League champion —  to just 10 points in the first quarter.

“It started off strong,” sophomore Meghan Sheridan said. “We definitely came into this game ready to go.”

The second quarter was another fast paced and intense eight minutes, as both teams came out strong and hungry. However, the Patriots were missing crucial layups and free throws throughout the second quarter, giving West Catholic a chance to jump on top a lot just before halftime.

As the third quarter was underway, “we knew they were going to come out strong,” sophomore starter Courtland Schumacher said.

Carroll caught up to West Catholic and tied up the game at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, though, the ball just wasn’t falling, layups were missed, and passes led to turnovers.

The Patriots “couldn’t really stay with them,” Taylor Wilson said.
