Archbishop Carroll’s field hockey team shut out Conwell-Egan, 6-0, during Thursday’s senior night.
The Lady Pats wasted no time, as captain Sienna Golden scored in two minutes against a weak Conwell-Egan defense. As time was winding down in the first quarter, captain Samantha Hewitt snuck in a goal while being heavily contested by multiple Conwell-Egan defenders.
Hewitt wasn’t done quite yet. With only three minutes into the second quarter she scored again. The Lady Pats defense was on point as Beth Wineburg, Emma Grant, and Sarah Wood all had stops throughout the game.
Laura Wineburg and Sienna Golden tagged on two more goals in the third quarter. Lastly, Peyton Nord added the sixth and final goal with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
This game was pretty much one-sided, as Conwell-Egan didn’t have much going for it the whole game. The Lady Pats are now placed second in the Philadelphia Catholic League, right behind Cardinal O’Hara by one game.
“It was really exciting,” Laura Wineburg said. “We walked away with a 6-0 win for our last home game at Carroll on our senior night.”
Captain Beth Wineburg expressed some emotional words about the team.
“Even though it had been our first game on grass in a while,” Beth Wineburg said, “we still came out with a great amount of intensity. As a senior it was very sentimental, and I loved playing with my girls, and getting the win on senior night.”
Wood had some pleasant things to say about the team.
“That was a great win for us,” Wood said. “We definitely have the potential to make it far in the playoffs, and with our hard work and dedication, possibly even states.”
The win followed a senior night ceremony, during which each player’s name was called and they walked with their parents to a large poster of themselves. Parents and players took pictures holding flowers in front of the posters.
