The Archbishop Carroll Jazz Band accepted fewer than seven new members this year. The deficit of new musicians marks the continuation of a long streak of music ensembles experiencing annual declines.
Every year, nearly all Carroll music ensembles drop in their number of members. For example, the Concert Band this year went from around 27 members to 24.
Some musicians in the music department are disappointed in the shortage of new people.
“The more people you have, the more styles and instruments you can have,” Jazz Band member Nathaniel Folarin said. “Size is important. Size matters.”
Others have a more optimistic view on the amount of new recruits.
“We’ve never had many people so considering that we got more people than we did last year, I can’t be anything but happy,” Rameer Woods said.
