As the season and the temperature grows colder, Archbishop Carroll is transitioning into winter sports, which include wrestling, swimming, bowling, basketball and bocce. Advertising is spread throughout the school as well on social media promote joining these sports.
Winter sports participation has been growing, according to athletic director Thomas Quintois.
“I see all the sports and tremendous growth in these sports,” Quintois said. “Wrestling has almost doubled their numbers, in students joining. We all know that girl basketball is going to be successful. Both boys and girls look to be strong this year.”
Factoring in the “student” part of being called a student athlete is important.
“Your job is to be a student first and athlete second, so what I say to kids all the time [is]: don’t make it difficult for administration to [allow you to] stay eligible,” Quintois said. “Work hard and if you see yourself heading down that negative path academically, then seek help.”
Hayden Skowronek, a senior on the wrestling team, expressed high hopes for his last year on the school’s wrestling team.
“Last year, best year,” he said.
Excited for the swim season is Liberty Grant, a junior on the swim team.
“I am excited to start my first year being co-captain,” she said.
