Dear Underclassman,
As you finish your years out in Carroll, I would like to share advice that I wished someone told me at the beginning of my high school career. First of all, your grades matter. Each year matters more than the last, so make sure you self-advocate. No one is going to hold your hand, making sure everything is turned in on time; you need to make sure that you ask teachers you feel comfortable talking about grades and what you need to do to achieve higher grades.. If you have accommodations make sure to make your teachers aware of them.
Don’t miss an opportunity to experience Kairos. You will have the chance to bond with your classmates, and also gain a deeper understanding of your teachers. Each person will have a different experience. Even if you don’t practice the Catholic faith, or don’t practice a religion at all; Kairos is a time to finally realize that you are growing up and heading off to college or wherever you go soon. It’s also a time to heal from anything in your past that might still be burdening you. I know that I have made friendships that helped me finish out my senior year.
Finally, remember to not let drama affect who you are. Drama is inevitable in high school. It will come and go in waves. But how to handle it is very important. First, never do anything that will jeopardize going to school, whether it’s being suspended or expelled or even just getting written up. Never change yourself to be a part of a more popular crowd, always stick with the friends that never left your side. High school is not made to be easy but count on making the most of it. Because at the end of the day, when you feel successful, your happiness will spread to all those around you that have watched you every step of the way.
Sincerely,
Gracie Brogan
