Archbishop Carroll’s English department experienced a lot of change this school year with three new teachers joining the faculty after two others left and one became an administrator. One of the new teachers, Mr. Randolph Voldish, said change is what brought him to Carroll.
“I thought change would be nice,” Mr. Voldish said.
Mr. Voldish taught for 24 years at St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in Northeast Philadelphia. Before that, he taught at Roman Catholic in Center City. Early in his career, Mr. Voldish had a stint as a long-term substitute at Carroll.
During most of his career, Mr. Voldish taught English Language Arts. However, he also has taught other subjects. When he was a long-term substitute at Carroll, for example, he taught social studies.
Mr. Voldish is part of an English department staff that’s a lot different than last year’s. At the end of the last school year, Mrs. Diane Gimpel, who taught 12th grade ELA, retired, and Ms. Elizabeth Collins left Carroll to join the faculty at Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast. Mrs. Julia Young became the assistant principal for student affairs, so she is teaching only one ELA class this year — AP Literature. As a result of those moves, Carroll hired Mr. Voldish, Mr. Brian Cullen, and Ms. Cleo Hoey to join Miss Delanie Wampler and Mr. John Woehlcke, who is the department chairman, on the English staff.
As the second marking period begins, Mr. Voldish continues to acclimate to his new post.
“Sometimes good, sometimes bad,” Mr. Voldish said of his experience at Carroll so far, “but I would say that it’s a change for me. I want to focus on the fact that it’s a change for me.”
Mr. Voldish expressed hope for the future.
“Nice to be on board,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a pleasant journey in Carroll.”
