Many new teachers joined the Archbishop Carroll faculty this year, and one of them is Ms. Cleo Hoey, who teaches English to juniors and seniors, and also a broadcast journalism elective.
Ms. Hoey has always wanted to be a teacher, so she majored in education at Immaculata University. However, she did a double major, also majoring in communications.
“For me it’s important, in my own life, to be well-rounded,” said Ms. Hoey.
She focused on digital media, which is where she found her love for filmmaking and both print and digital journalism. She also loved her broadcast journalism class at Upper Darby High School, and loves that she gets to teach the same class now at Carroll.
“And then here at Carroll, it’s kind of come full circle because I’m teaching everything that’s important to me, in terms of stories but also in terms of broadcast video production,” said Ms. Hoey.
After college, Ms. Hoey joined the Disney College Program, where she worked at Disney World for seven months. She worked in both food and beverage and guest relations. Ms. Hoey also learned Spanish during this time, and would love to visit some of her friends in Peru and Mexico one day.
Ms. Hoey has really enjoyed Carroll so far, from the students to her fellow teachers, to the subject she is teaching.
“I love Carroll,” she said. “Everyone has been so kind and welcoming, since the first day honestly… I genuinely love being here.”
Students have also loved having Ms. Hoey as their teacher this year.
“The environment that she has in her classroom is very calming and welcoming,” said junior Christina Cortese. “She makes her space comfortable to share ideas and have open discussions with our classmates.”
Ms. Hoey’s students like that she wants them to both succeed in and enjoy her classes.
“She always finds a way to incorporate something fun into the lessons,” said junior Grace Trimbur. “She’s one of those teachers that cares so much for her students and their educations.”
