The Archbishop Carroll Patriots boys’ wrestling team lost 42-34 Wednesday against Cardinal O’Hara in a match decided by forfeits.
The Patriots had to forfeit the weight of 107 but quickly got their points back with a forfeit win from freshman Nicholas Mastripolito. The weight of 121 went to O’Hara via forfeit.
The next match was between O’Hara’s Matt McCarthy and Carroll sophomore Bobby Whitehouse. Whitehouse was pinned four minutes in and Carroll trailed 18-6.
The next match had Carroll freshman Griffin Lane facing off against O’Hara’s Akeem Whipple. With a score of 17-4, Lane notched the decision and Carroll was only behind 8.
The next match at the weight of 139 saw O’Hara’s Kevin McCarthy sharing the mat with Carroll junior Zack Peck. McCarthy was too much for Peck as Peck got pinned in 37 seconds.
The next two matches saw pins for the Patriots when senior Gabe Vallejo pinned Jay Borelli in 1:17 and senior Will Wood pinned Ron Cain in 1:28. Those pins had Carroll down by two team points with five matches to go.
The 160 lb. match was the Patriots’ Ronan Finley, a junior, and the Lions’ Israel Smith. Finley fought but could not keep up with Smith, who pinned Finley in one minute.
The next two matches would be pins for the Pats and put them ahead 34-30. Match one featured junior Jeff Roth, who took his first pin and win this season in three minutes. Match two went to Patriots star Cole Conlen, who pinned Dante Jones in 1:11.
The Patriots’ lead did not last long as the Lions received two forfeit wins at the weights of 215 lb. and 285 lb. The two forfeits put the Lions in the lead and won them the match.
