The Archbishop Carroll Lady Patriots defeated the Eagles of Conwell-Egan on Tuesday night by a score of 59-23.
The Lady Pats were able to blow out Conwell-Egan despite losing starting center Brooke Olender just before the game because of illness. The Patriots sent out senior Bridget Archbold to fill in the place of Olender. Archbold was able to show why she was deserving of the starting spot, racking up rebounds and helping out the team in many ways.
“I was just happy that the coaches trusted me to start,” said Archbold. “We missed Brooke a lot today, but we have a lot of talent here so it was a lot of fun to play.”
The Lady Pats came out strong and they led 17-2 midway through the first quarter. Kayla Eberz got quickly into the game as she knocked down a triple and accumulated nine early points. Alexis Eberz was also able to storm into the game, knocking down two threes and six points with less than two minutes to go.
Carroll continued to put the foot on the pedal and led by 20 points with some time remaining in the second quarter. Alexis Eberz knocked down triples and amassed 17 points in the first half, giving Carroll a 35-16 lead at halftime.
“Coming back from the Wood loss, I knew we had to get this win to keep us going,” Alexis Eberz said.
Coach Renie Shields’ team grew its lead in the third quarter, which ended with a score of 42-18.
“I thought we shared the ball really well,” Shields said. “We got some really good shots. I think that’s all we care about.”
The Lady Pats continued to dominate the rest of the game and sealed the deal with two and one plays from Kayla Eberz that led her to a 27-point game, outpacing her older sister Alexis Eberz’s 23-point game. However, it was not the stats but the next contest that Kayla Eberz talked about after the win.
“We gotta prepare ourselves for a big game on Thursday,” she said.
The Lady Pats will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 30, when they take on Delco rival Cardinal O’Hara Lady Lions in Springfield.
