The first Manny Flick Regatta of the Horvat Series kicked off in spectacular fashion Sunday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia with teams from across the region — including the Archbishop Carroll crew — competing in a day of intense rowing action.
In the women’s varsity eight event, the junior crew finished seventh out of nine teams.
“It was okay,” said junior rower Isabella Maxymuik. “The wind was kind of bad. Got a little splashed by the water. The boat was a little un-set. The power was there, and that’s a lot to build off of this season. “
In the men’s varsity eight event, the senior crew faced stiff competition, ultimately finishing 4th out of 6 teams.
“Best race in a long time,” said senior rower Colin McClarren. “Conditions were bad. We fought through. We powered through. We were 15 seconds off of [first place] La Salle, so I take that as a win.”
Fellow senior rower Joe Lazzari echoed McClarren’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of teamwork and strategy.
“I think it was a really good race to kick off the season with,” Lazzari said. “The eight did well. We blew off two boats, and we were pretty close with the boat that came in third place. We did really well for a Carroll eight for our current situation at the varsity level, so I think this is going to be a good start to a successful season.”
The Manny Flick Regatta marks the first event in the Horvat Series, which will continue throughout the spring rowing season.
