Archbishop Carroll boys and girls crew members expressed some dissatisfaction with their finish in the fourth Manny Flick race, held in Philadelphia on April 6. The girls varsity four, consisting of Kelly McGee, Analei Frank, Isabella Maxymuik, Grace Lazzari, and Mia Perez, placed ninth out of 17 boats. The boys varsity four, consisting of Colin McClarren, Julian McPherson, Joseph Lazzari, and John Smith, placed 10th out of 22 boats.
“It was a good race, but obviously not as good as we wanted it to go,” junior rower Isabella Maxymuik said. “We were in the first heat, meaning that we were up against the best boats. We were in the sixth lane out of all of them, which meant that we were the sixth-best overall according to our times from the last flick.”
Sophomore John Smith initially expressed disappointment in his boat’s results but then turned the sentiment around to an optimistic message.
“You know, we thought we’d do good, but, you know, you have those bad flicks that get you ready for the next ones,” Smith said. “It helps get your mindset right.
Spectator and photographer Ben Sammartino said he enjoyed watching the rowers and remarked on the 29 mph winds the rowers faced.
“It was good,” Sammartino said. “It was a bit cold and windy … But, overall, it was a really good day and I had a lot of fun watching.”
The last Manny Flick race was April 13 and marked the end of shorter 1,500-meter races (“flicks”) that are held on one day. Next up are the standard 2,000-meter races that span multiple days (“regattas”); such races include the City Championship (May 3-4) and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (May 16-17).
