With the school year nearing an end, Archbishop Carroll’s student Council wants to finish the year on a high note with many events planned to ensure this. These events include the Duck Donuts fundraiser, the senior field day door decorating, and student council elections.
The Duck Donuts fundraiser benefits student council. The money raised will go to events the student council holds for students.
One upcoming student council event is door decorating for senior field day, which is Thursday. Student council members will decorate each senior homeroom door with imagery of the country that homeroom will represent during field day activities. Among the countries that will be represented are Ireland and Brazil. A heated debate arose in student council meetings over whether the Ireland senior homeroom or the Brazil senior homeroom should wear green.
“Everything regarding Ireland is green, from the land to the holiday of St. Patrick’s Day,” said Bridget Grant, a sophomore. “It just had to be green.”
The annual door decorating also involves all grades present in Student Council, with many of the sophomores decorating homeroom 1A with the theme of Ireland
After senior field day, the next big student Council event will be student council elections. They happen in June.
With this deadline rapidly approaching, incumbent student council members are trying to secure their spots for next year while other students who have not served previously on student council are also submitting applications to run for a seat. Positions on the executive board and as class officers have the most intense competition. Some students say they are ready to put in the effort to earn a seat next year.
“I’ve always wanted to run for student council officer because I want to bring change to the Carroll community,” said sophomore Olivia Hermanovich.
This election, however, has also sparked minor controversy in the Carroll community, as the executive board seats will remain open only to those with one previous year of student council experience. Some disagree with this decision, but others think it is for the best.
“You really need to know how student council already works to make a good fit for the executive board,” said Mrs. Christina Mulligan, Spanish teacher and student council moderator.
Among the things student council members do are set up for dances and volunteer at school events,.
