Wiffle ball has come to Archbishop Carroll.
The wiffle ball club was founded by Mr. Anthony Cimorelli, a freshman theology teacher. Mr. Cimorelli, who loved playing wiffle ball as a kid and now plays the game with his kids, said he figured a wiffle ball club would be fun for students and allow them to build friendships. Mr. Cimorelli proposed the club at the end of the last school year, and, following administration’s approval, the club began this year.
“The Archbishop Carroll Wiffle Ball club, in its inaugural season, has been a great experience for many students, and the hope is that it continues for many years to come,” said Mr. Cimorelli.
Mr. Chris Eberz helps Mr. Cimorelli moderate the club.
“I was excited to join Mr. Cimorelli with wiffle ball because of a combination of things, but it has allowed us to work with kids outside the classroom in a fun environment,” said Mr. Eberz.
The club’s student leader is sophomore captain John McCullough. McCullough helps with event planning. One event he helped plan, with help from former Carroll student and current Phillies employee TJ Farrell, was a wiffle ball club trip to Citizens Bank Park that included students from Saint Katherine School, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia high school for students with special learning needs that operates inside Carroll’s building. Thirteen Carroll students and about 20 Saint Katherine’s students got a tour of Citizens Bank Park as well as the Hall of Fame Club and the media room. The students played wiffle ball with former Phillies who are now team ambassadors: Mickey Morandini, Milt Thompson, and Dickie Noles. The students left with a Phillies hats and bags, along with autographs from the former players.
“The trip was very cool,” McCullough said. “Each of us who was invited to go had a fun time while also getting a one of a kind experience,” McCullough said.
McCullough also assists Mr. Cimorelli and Mr. Eberz in keeping things fun and fair for students while keeping the students involved in the club positive and enthusiastic.
Wiffle ball games are typically played on Mondays on the softball/field hockey field. If interested in joining the club, Mr. Cimorelli or Mr. Chris Eberz are the teachers to go to. Mr.Cimorelli typically sends out email reminders weekly with information on games.
