With new head coach Pat Dunn at the helm, Archbishop Carroll’s baseball team won its season opener Friday — a 13-0 drubbing of Germantown Friends.
“It’s an exciting time to be here at Carroll,” Dunn said.
From the outset the Patriots were hot, collecting four runs scored in the first inning off two hits, an error, and four stolen bases.
“The vibe was up today,” Dunn said.
Matt McGaughey took to the mound for Carroll.
“This whole day my mindset was to throw strikes,” said McGaughey. “I’m gonna test their hitters out.”
The Patriots went scoreless in the second inning, but bounced back with three in the third and sixth in the fourth.
The Patriots were hyped for the fifth inning with lot of energy from team captain Jalyn Tidwell.
“I have to be a leader, especially for this young team, so I come to work every day and making sure everyone else is, too,” said Tidwell. “I make sure I’m doing everything. I can sort of lead by example and vocally.”
Matt McGaughey came back onto the mound in the fifth inning, but only threw one out before closer Max Barnes came in and shut everything down, sealing the deal for the Patriots.
The Patriots will be back at home Monday evening when they take on Friends Central at 4 p.m.
