The Archbishop Carroll Theater Society’s spring musical production — High School Musical — opens tonight, Friday, April 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at acts.booktix.com, or they can be purchased at the door for $15. Carroll students get in free, as long as they have their student IDs.
Members of the theater society have been hard at work at this show since their auditions in January, with weekly full-cast vocal rehearsals and dance rehearsals, as well as blocking rehearsals dedicated to the leads. Students can expect to see some familiar faces take center stage on Friday, that usually remain behind the scenes in stage crew.
However, there are student’s like junior Brenna Timothy—who plays one of the Skater Dudes—who are just as equally involved behind the scenes, as well as in the spotlight.
“For me personally, this show is different from the others because I have jobs to fill both on and off stage in cast and stage crew,” Timothy said.
The story follows Troy, basketball captain at East High, and Gabriella, math and science whiz, and how their budding romance sparks the students at their high school to branch out and try new things. Junior Olivia Hermanovich, who plays Sharpay Evans, shared her feelings about her character, and why she enjoys playing Sharpay.
“I love being able to show a lot of emotion and passion in my performance, and connect with the audience,” Hermanovich said.
Senior Emmie Menna, who plays drama-club teacher Ms. Darbus, said the role challenges her in all the right ways.
“It’s a completely different ball game for me,” Menna said. “[Darbus] Is such a dynamic, energetic character, so it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster figuring out how to portray her. Overall, though, she’s so much fun to play every night, and I’m really grateful to be challenged with a role like hers.”
