Archbishop Carroll’s freshman football team finished off the season strong after getting its second win of 2022. The win was over Great Valley High School, 18-0.

The game’s first score came from the Patriots as Xavier Johnson pulled in a 85-yard touchdown reception. The scoring wouldn’t stop there as Johnson had another receiving touchdown and Marcel Sander scored a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“I’m just proud of how hard the guys worked,” coach Tom Murphy said. “Even when the season got a little rough, everyone on the team stayed together and continued to work their hardest, which I think ultimately led to the win.”

The air attack was strong for the Patriots as Johnson finished the game with 133 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and John Thompson collected 64 receiving yards. Marcel Sanders had another good game where he passed for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

The rushing attack had an assortment of heroes, including Sanders, Semai Hurst, and James Davin. Sanders finished the game with 37 rushing yards and a touchdown. Hurst had 52 rushing yards and Davin finished with 32.

“I think we’re all just so happy we could finish with a win,” Sanders, the quarterback, said. “We all were pretty confident that we would win this game and we just came out with a lot of excitement.”

The excitement stemmed from a desire to finish on a high note, according to Johnson, the wide receiver.

“We all wanted to finish strong,” Johnson said. “We all worked hard this off season and it just feels good to finish off the season strong.”
