The Archbishop Carroll girls’ basketball team lost an exciting game against a very impressive Westtown School team by a final score of 59-54 last Tuesday.
Though it ended in a loss, the game showed Carroll was able to go toe-to-toe with the best team in the Philadelphia area.
“Our team played well today,” head coach Renie Shields said. “We were making shots. We just need to take care of the ball and learn to deal with pressure.”
The Lady Pats came out firing in the first quarter, opening with a 12-2 run. They were especially good from three, hitting four on a good percentage. They were also able to hold Westtown out of the paint and forced many bad shots. Carroll took the early lead, winning 22-10 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Carroll’s offense did not slow down while Westtown’s offense picked up and started to match their points. As the quarter progressed, the two teams would go back and forth, trading buckets. Westtown was able to cut into the deficit by only two, and Carroll still commanded a 10-point lead. The Lady Pats led 36-26 going into halftime.
Westtown came charging out of the half, fully finding their footing with their outstanding offense. On the other end, Carroll was struggling to put points up on the board. A 12-3 run at the end of the third quarter would cap off a huge quarter of play for Westtown as they cut the lead down to four. The Lady Pats still led, though, the score 44-40.
Westtown would not put their foot on the brakes going into the fourth quarter, putting up the most points they did in any quarter this game. Carroll was able to get their offense back under control and keep it a close game for much of the fourth quarter, even as Westtown took its first lead. Westtown was able to pull away just enough at the end of the fourth and complete the comeback to win, 59-54.
