“With a single sheet of parchment and 56 signatures, America began the greatest political journey in human history,” said President Trump in remarks posted by the White House.
On July 4, 1776, America declared independence from Great Britain.
America declared independence because of unfair taxes, biased laws, and no representation in the government. American colonists wanted to be free from the tyrannical rule of the British.
“That Declaration and that pledge were the beginning of the most significant political event in the history of the world, the American Revolution,” said Marco Rubio, the secretary of state for the United States, in remarks ahead of last year’s Independence Day celebration.
After the long and bloody American Revolutionary War, America defeated the British and became free from their rule.
Today, many people celebrate America’s freedom every year on the Fourth of July with Independence Day celebrations.
In honor of the 2026 semiquincentennial, various national celebrations have been organized, including the Patriot Games.
The Patriot Games are a competition for “outstanding high school athletes from across the country,” meaning that someone from Carroll may have a chance at competing at the national level, according to America 250.
Another event that celebrates America’s freedom is a program called Sail4th 250.
This program welcomes tall ships from around the world to the Port of New York and New Jersey for a celebration of American independence.
“This celebration will be the largest flotilla of tall ships from around the world,” according to Sail4th 250.
At Carroll, many people are excited about America’s anniversary,
“I will celebrate it by having a barbecue with my family because it is a tradition we have every 4th of July,” said Stefano Cottini, a freshman at Carroll.
Beyond family traditions, local communities have offered additional means of celebration.
“I will watch the fireworks to celebrate America’s 250,” said Teresa Abraham, a freshman at Carroll.
