Not all the scenes were scary at Eastern State Penitentiary. Some areas were set aside for hanging out, eating smores, and listening to music.

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Archbishop Carroll students embarked on a haunting field trip to the Eastern State Penitentiary. During the month of October, the historic site and museum in Philadelphia is set up as a haunted prison. Many people came to get a good scare.

132 students attended this trip. Freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors were put into three buses and driven down into Philadelphia. Many other schools visited the penitentiary at the same time but Carroll’s teachers did a good job making sure everyone was accounted for on the buses going back.

I really enjoyed the trip to Eastern State Penitentiary,” said Mrs. Janine Cahill, one of the teachers who chaperoned the trip. “It was a great night! When I think back on the trip, it brings a smile to my face and makes me laugh!”

A good time was had by all, according to Mr. Christopher Fryberger, assistant principal for student life.

“While we were inside, students and teachers had a blast,” Mr. Fryberger said.  “It was a great night of scares and bonding.  The success of this trip and the size of it will allow us to continue to promote future trips, such as Longwood Gardens, a Sixers game, a Flyers game, Top Golf and more.”

While the trip was a blast, it had its scary moments.

“The first time going through the attractions I was so scared, but the second time around I knew what to expect,” senior Harper Henry said.

The students could go off on their own at the site, walking through the attractions. There were multiple spots to visit. In addition to the scary attractions, there were fire pits where people could make s’mores and areas where people could sit down to listen sit to singers and and other entertainers.
