Carroll racks up flexible instruction days because of power outages and snow

Archbishop Carroll has been blessed, or cursed, with flexible instruction days lately.

Last week, Carroll had three FIDs as PECO worked to fix a transformer damaged in a Jan. 9 storm. Power was restored during the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 12. Students remained out of the building on Monday, Jan. 15 for Dr. Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday recognizing the civil rights leader.

On Monday evening, snow began to fall and cover the roads in many school districts where Carroll students live. Principal William Gennaro called students and their families that night, informing them of another FID for Tuesday. Mr. Gennaro made calls and sent emails again Thursday night, letting the Carroll community know Friday would be another FID as meteorologists predicted a snowfall of three to six inches.

Students had varying opinions on the day off. Some found difficulty working.

“There are a lot of distractions.” said Christopher Long, a sophomore.

Others believed that the FID helped them be more productive.

“I thought I was working harder on FID,” said sophomore Jacob Cooper. “I liked how I got to sleep in more.”
