Archbishop Carroll’s cheer team has been during a season that has presented challenges, taken effort, and developed commitment.
On Jan. 13, the squad teamed up with the Stomp and Shake team for a halftime performance during the girls varsity basketball game, showcasing unity, energy, and girl power.
The cheerleading team participated in Penncrest High School’s competition on Dec. 7, where it offered a strong performance.
The team also attended the Philadelphia Catholic League championships and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s district championships.
Team members expressed commitment to one another and the value of teamwork and school spirit despite challenges the team faced during those events.
“The team’s effort and commitment this season have really stood out,” said Payton Birkmire, a senior. “No matter what happens, everyone stays focused and works hard not just for themselves but for the whole team.”
Birkmire also reflected on how the team handles challenges.
“What I’ve noticed most is how the team handles tough situations and competitions,” she said. “Especially the girls finishing their season, they face challenges but always find a way to bounce back and keep pushing.”
Looking ahead to upcoming events, Birkmire shared the team’s message for each other.
“As we get ready for upcoming events, the team keeps reminding each other that we do this for ourselves and for one another,” Birkmire said. “When someone is feeling down or facing criticism, this message helps everyone stay positive and focused on what really matters.”
Freshman Maimouna Kabia said the cheer team practiced closely with the Stomp and Shake team in preparation for the halftime performance at the Carroll vs. Cardinal O’Hara girls basketball game. The routine incorporated hip-hop, stunting, and stomping.
Kamora Lambert, a junior on the Stomp and Shake team, shared her thoughts about the combined performance.
“The combined performance between stomp and cheer created an endearing and welcoming environment,” Lambert said. “It showed unity between both teams. It also shared an empowering ‘girl power’ moment with the audience.”
Lambert said her favorite part of the halftime show was a section created by the Stomp team.
“It gave us the opportunity to truly make ourselves known,” Lambert said. “It showed our energy and confidence,” said Lambert.
Overall, Lambert described the performance as a highlight of the season.
“The performance was fantastic from beginning to end,” she said. “It gave us a chance to come together as one team. It created a cute and powerful girl power routine.”
Earlier in the season, the cheer team advanced to district competition, which Kabia said shaped the team’s mindset.
“This taught the team that we may not always win, but at least we kept going and kept our heads held high,” said Kabia. “We had a rough routine, but we always keep going. That’s what makes us resilient.”
As one of the youngest members of the team, Kabia said contributing during recent events has been both exciting and challenging.
“Contributing to the team has been really exciting but a little nerve-wracking at the same time,” said Kabia. “The whole team has been very supportive and encouraging, and I’ve learned a lot from watching the older teammates and taking their advice.”
The final event scheduled for the cheerleading team is their yearly trip to Nationals in Disney World, Florida.
