Archbishop Carroll sophomores have the chance to trade a regular school day for the streets of New York City on March 31.
Students will get to experience popular sights in the city that never sleeps. Students will also have the freedom to have fun with friends and make their own discoveries.
Mr. Randolph Voldish, an English teacher at Carroll, has had this trip in the works for a while now.
“I think that the activities Mr. Voldish has planned will not only make the trip more enjoyable for my class, but will also allow each of us to appreciate the beauty of New York City.” said Ivory Potoway, Carroll’s sophomore class president.
Several staff members will be attending, including Dr. Allison Vinci, Mr. Joseph Ritter, Mr. Gregory Arnoldy, and Mr. Matthew Mitchell, as well as Mr. Voldish himself, who hopes to bring along two more teachers.
“All of the sights we chose are things I know students will actually enjoy,” Mr. Voldish said, “It’s not too far away, but it’s far enough to feel special.”
One key moment students should be excited for is the guided boat tour around the harbor. Ten minutes will be given during which the boat’s engine is cut off to let students take pictures with the Statue of Liberty.
While in the city, students will be with the small groups while also being accompanied by a faculty member.
“When sophomores are having fun, they know the limits,” Mr. Voldish said. “They’re mature enough to handle it, and they understand the importance of staying together.”
Potoway agreed.
“I am aware we can be a lot at times,” she said. “That’s expected with a big group of kids. This will ultimately strengthen our relationships with each other and allow us to make new memories, giving us the opportunity to have an even better trip.”
This trip is not Mr. Voldish’s first rodeo. He took the juniors on a trip to Washington, D.C., in the fall.
“The Washington, D.C. trip was an excellent experience and a reminder of how our capital is a place where history and the future come together,” said Mr. Ritter, who chaperoned. “Allowing students to see it firsthand was truly meaningful. In the same way, a trip to New York City will be a tremendous experience for our students as well.”
Everyone who signs up for the New York City trip will depart the school grounds at 7:15 a.m. The expected arrival time is 10 a.m. at the boat pier. The groups will leave together at 3:30 p.m. to be back at Carroll at around 6:30 p.m.
The trip costs $95 for those who sign up before March 1. Beginning March 1, the price goes up to $105 per student. The trip is limited to 104 students and already enough to fill a bus have signed up and turned in permission forms. Information and permission slips can be found in Mr. Voldish’s room — Room 106. Mr. Voldish also is the person to pay.
Students are to wear Carroll pride apparel to represent the school, and to bring around $75 to enjoy New York-style food, go into some shops, and bring home souvenirs.
“Talk up the trip,” Mr. Voldish said, “This is one they won’t forget.”
